Skill Limiting - Children
« on: May 26, 2009, 02:31:23 AM »
I really got tired of rug rats and children having wants to reach level 7 or 8 in a given skill.  These mods change that.  Children are limited to a max of 4 in any given skill.  There is an exception that if a toddlers reaches level 4 and continues to play with that toy, level 5 is possible.  But wait, there's more!  As the kid starts to gain a skill, the chances of gaining that skill in a given play session decreases.  So at times the child will gain a skill, at other times, the kid is just playing for fun.

TelescopeLimitBV works with Base Game and any EP up to Bon Voyage.
TelescopeLimitFT works with FT, to infinity, and beyond.

Any chance of doing this for adults & elders as well?

I'd like to know that most of my sims are just plain average with no chance of improvement unless "god" says so.

If I was to do such a limitation on teens and adults, there wouldn't be a way to override it in game to have them skill higher.

As it is now, I've had very few scholarships for skills.  Since for the most part teens have at most 4 points in any given skill, and usually only 2 or 3, you've got to work at it to get those scholarships.  And as far as adults go, by relying on autonomous skilling, you are usually in control of whether they get those high skilled promotions or not.  By the way, the limited careers may be just what you need for your underachieving sims.  You may want to take a look at them.

Maybe, but not exactly.

By 'god says so' I mean I can move it up if I wish to. I'd like to have most sims capped at a minimum (you would not believe how hard I have to work at keeping a sim on cooking 0) that I can raise as I choose, or use TJ's skill randomiser to go above.

I don't know, I guess it'd be nice to be able to arbitrate where the skilling stops. ;)

That's easy.  Don't give them anything they can skill up on, have pizza delivered every day, and hire a maid.  lol

Maybe the easiest way would be to use the Insimenator, which will allow you to raise or lower skills as needed, or play with testingcheatsenabled and slide the skills to where you want them.  Limiting toddler skilling was easy because of the limited number of objects they can gain skills on.  I know I've missed quite a few ways children can skill up, and that's just a fraction of the way a teen or older can skill up.

I should look around to see if there's a mod that increases or decreases skill gains.  If there's something like that, it would be easy to modify it to stop or bring to a very slow increase of skill gains.

I may have found what you need.  Instant Skills and Fast Increment Skill Gain.  Included in all the options for faster skill gains, there's one mod that slows skilling down.  If you still have sims skilling up too fast, let me know and I'll see if I can mod it to stop skilling completely.

I've tried the slowing down one before, and it's not exactly what I need. I guess what I'm after is a skill lock of sorts so I can say how high any sim can go in any given skill and that's as high as they will skill, no further. Thinking about it, this would be very well-suited to the sim blender, so I might take it up over on simbology. But first, of course, let me know if it's actually feasable, or if I'm just being too damned picky about my sims?

It will be a week or so before I can look into this.  I'm out of town for the holiday and my laptop doesn't have TS2 or any of the tools installed.  Actually it's got nothing installed, I used the away time to install Windows 7, so all my programs need to be reinstalled after I get home.

From what I remember working on the limited skilling for toddlers and children, each object that allows skilling would have to be modified.  I'd have to check to see if there's a way to limit skill gains with one mod, but thinking how it's handled by object, I really don't think it's possible.  Blender simply modifies a sim's skill.  I can't imagine how it could set a limit on the upper level for a given sim easily.

I'll take a look at the mod I suggested for slower skilling and see if it gives me any more insight or if it's a simple change to stop skilling completely when I get home.

Ta for that. I don't like coming across as a whiny bitch begging for the impossible. I can always continue with the 'hand of god' method of keeping certain sims stupid if required. I'd just prefer a centralised locking system if I can get one.
